about

This track contains excerpts from the Italian folk song 'Bella Ciao', later adopted as an anti-fascist anthem by partisan forces during the Nazi occupation/ collaboration in Italy at the end of the second world war. Though often now treated as a victory march, its lyrics concern a moment of realisation: that your country has fallen to fascism, and that you must fight, and will likely die fighting.

lyrics

When we lost
I saw you cutting out the parts you don't want
I felt you stepping over lines that we'd drawn
Power from secrets, god I thought you'd know
I watched you guarding all your activism
Mistaking glory for conviction
We came to tell you that your war is not won
And that your cover is blown

Gone.
Wolves dressed as sheep dressed as wolves.
Run,
Demons spill out of the halls.

And had they not smelled the blood
We could have been safe by now
It's all gone
It's all gone

Una mattina, mi son svegliato
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
Una mattina, mi son svegliato
E ho trovato l'invasor.

O partigiano, porta mi via
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
O partigiano, porta mi via,
Che mi sento di morir.

I saw you cutting out the parts you don't want
I felt you stepping over lines that we'd drawn
When you were haunted by the thought that we'd lost
And all your secrets were nothing at all

I saw you cutting out the parts you don't want
I felt you stepping over lines that we'd drawn
When you were haunted by the thought that we'd lost
And all your secrets were nothing at all

So tell me how does that compare to all my love?
So tell me how does that compare to all my love?
So tell me how does that compare to all my love?

E se io muoio da partigiano,
O bella ciao, bella ciao, bella ciao ciao ciao
E se io muoio da partigiano,
Tu mi devi seppellir.
